John Howard Griffin’s 1961 nonfiction work, Black Like Me, takes its title from the last lines of Langston Hughes’ 1926 poem entitled, Dream Variations. It reads like this, and the lines appear in the book before before the inside title.

“Rest at pale evening . . .
A tall, slim tree . . .
Night coming tenderly
Black like me.”

I was a high school senior when Hughes died in 1967, and had already read Griffin’s revealing work.
