Distinguished Marine’s life honored at Monument Terrace

Several people gathered at Monument Terrace Friday afternoon to pay tribute to a military veteran.
Fellow veterans honored Master Sgt. Mike Diuguid, who was retired and living in Lynchburg when he died of a heart attack in late February.
Diuguid graduated from Brookville High School in 1989 and later went on to have a distinguished career in the Marines as a band director.
On Friday, one of his childhood friends, Russ Nixon, presented the family, who came out all the way from Myrtle Beach, with a plaque honoring his service.
“He had an infectious smile, he never met a stranger and he was very humble,” says mom Eula Diuguid. “In all his accolades, he never boasted about anything. He was always willing to help.”
This is the 1,022nd week straight veterans have gathered at Monument Terrace.

Beloved Father, Son, Nephew, family member and friend Michael Lee Diuguid passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia to Eula Mae Diuguid on January 21,1970. He is preceded in death by his Maternal Grandmother, Beatrice H. Diuguid and Uncle Samuel Lee Diuguid.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Morgan Beatrice Diuguid and mother to Morgan, Jocelyn Harvey; his Mother: Eula Mae Diuguid Schnell; Sister, Beatrice Elizabeth Diuguid Bynum and husband Billy; Brother, Nathaniel Lamont Diuguid and wife Fanny; Brother at heart, Daniel Everett, Jr. and wife Amberlea; Beloved Bernadette Everett and Aunt Shelia Ann Duiguid; Uncles, James Emory Diuguid and Daniel “Gene” Everett, Sr.; Niece, Brianna Bynum; Nephew and niece at heart: Daniel Everett, III and Alexandra Everett ; Devoted Family Friend, Perry Brice.
He passed away a wealthy man, rich in the relationships he shared with a host of special family members and friends. Michael was a 1989 graduate of Brookville High School attended Five Towns College in New York before joining the Marines having served 24 years before retiring in 2019. An accomplished musician, Michael played in Marine Corp Jazz Band.
We will forever love and remember you; our lives are better for having you in it. We are comforted to know you are now watching over us. The family would like to express a special thank you to the Brown family. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg at 11:00 a.m. Michael will lie in repose today, Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
