Here is clip of "Last Week Tonight" episode from YouTube. Despite how conservatives paint this, the Sackler family still keeps billions and is not liable for any other legal action. It is not a victory for deceived drug addicts, but a potential cop-out.

The 1st 10&1/2 minutes is a bunch of whiney ass BS by a professional gadfly. John Oliver doesn't have 1 minute of experience running a business and it shows. He doesn't understand that MOST business to business sales people have periodic ride-a-longs with their boss or higher. I spent one day a week with an outdoor sales rep. Sales is that important. It doesn't matter if they're selling pharmaceuticals or lumber or dairy-doo or temporary labor. So what that he rode along with sales reps, do you expect corporate executives to not take interest in the efforts of their sales force?

And yes, people under attack defend themselves, including issuing self-serving statements crafted to generate sympathy or ameliorate antipathy designed by public relations professionals. There is an entire degreed college curriculum devoted to public relations. So what?

If you don't like the bankruptcy laws, the Sackler's didn't write them.
If you don't like corporate structure laws, the Sackler's didn't write them.
If you don't like third party releases, the Sacklers didn't write the law that allows them.
Elected officials that you and I voted for, (or against) wrote them, or at least voted them into law. One of the functions of corporate law is to encourage wealthy people to continue their enterprises without great personal risk. Do away with those protections and you will create mini employment boom and bust cycles. "I've made my fortune, you are all laid off effective immediately."

Was it approved by the FDA or not? Is there evidence that there was fraud in the FDA approval? Do doctors have a responsibility to inform patients about the side effects and dangers? Do patients have a responsibility to read the warning and the handout that comes with almost every drug? This isn't about responsibility and accountability. It is more anti-corporate nonsense and people who make money from it.. like John Oliver.

There is no such thing as "no risk" medication or medical practice. There is no such thing as "no risk" commercial activity. Sooner or later Atlas will shrug the people who take the risks and keep things going will move to Galt's Gulch, the remainder can go back to being hunter-gatherers.

So the government [FDA] approves oxycontin. Then it turns out the side effects warning that Purdue Pharma provided [as mandated by by the government] is true.

The family that owns the company that produced the government [FDA] approved drug is forced to cede ownership of the company AND the government gets to determine the leadership of the newly re-organized company; And the profits from the newly re-organized company gets funneled into government programs. Thereby creating more federal and state level jobs. Thereby creating more voters who are likely to to vote for bloated government. Sounds like another win for the DNC and the nanny state.

IF there is a warning of side effects and dangers, and you decide to take it, the consequences of the side effects and dangers are on you.

I weep for my country, Convince me I'm wrong.

Go to web site and read the actual legal documents. Issue is not about "side effects". It is about deception about addictiveness that involved the drug company and many doctors. Before whining about how the Sackler family will lose its company, think about how the members will keep billions while some addicts still suffer without access to effective rehab

LTC Eugene Chu - Did the FDA approve the drug or not? What deceptiveness?

Was the drug issued with a warning that warned about potential addictiveness or not?

Allow me a partial quote from the warning... "CAUTION: Opioid. Risk of overdose and addiction. Ask your healthcare professional if you should have naloxone on hand in case of overdose or accidental use." How much clearer does it have to be?
