Commonsense rules. Whenever I travel out of state, I reread each states gun laws, those I will travel through, to refresh my memory. For example: I don't carry through NY if I plan an overnight stop, I stop before entering Illinois to place my unloaded firearm into a locked case, and place the ammo separate from the firearm. Just a few examples. Even with reciprocity, you need to know which states are must declare.

I certainly agree with all of these 'Mistakes to be Avoided'! In regard to number 2 I would add that joining a local fish & game or gun club should be at the top of a the list before making a purchase for a number of reasons. It open you up to a welth of experience, advise and good company. Many shooters are receptive to letting you try try a few rounds with their favorite weapon and love telling you all about the pros and cons they've experienced. You'have lots of good company before you make an informed decision on your purchase.
