PO1 Kevin Dougherty that is an amazing share! My maternal great grandfather and great grandmother and their three children fled Germany in the early 19th century. They were a wealthy respected family in Strasbourg. It amazes me my great grandfather had the courage to leave everything for freedom. Seems my grandfather and his brother had been selected to go to the SS School. So, my great grandfather requested permission to go on ‘holiday’. They all packed one suitcase and got on a ship. They arrived in NYC, processed through Ellis Island and never looked back!

Very Cool. I am 1/4 Ashkenazim from the Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus region. They left in the late 1800s, I suspect as a result of the Russian persecution around then. Actually all of my ancestors came over post Civil War. Debbi's on the other hand ... some came as early as Jamestown, others met the boat.
