Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "A Light and Dusty Night." We return to Brazil again today in this composite photo taken this week (September 25th) near Cascavel, west of São Paulo near the border with Paraguay. A fixed foreground image was combined with a sky-tracking exposure to create the effects we see here. Zodiacal light (light scattered by dust in the Solar System's elliptic plane) surrounds Venus, seen as the Evening Star (west, right). The expanse of the Milky Way extends from the lower left to the top right. It is springtime in Brazil, which means that sunset is the optimal time for seeing the effects of zodiacal light. Conversely, the best time for seeing the same effect now in the Northern Hemisphere is early in the morning.

It looks like a giant sun size intergalactic spaceship took off across the sky in max warp speed and left a trail of stardust debris in it's wake.
