Being in the wilderness for hours to push your mind and body to their limit isn’t everybody’s idea of a good time, but for a U.S. Marine, it’s second nature.
Three North Carolina Marines are relishing a sport called adventure racing, which combines hiking, biking, running, paddling and land navigation into one competition where body and mind are stretched to the boundaries of human capabilities.

Most impressive adventure race I saw was won by Coast Guard sea rescue swimmers. Women were always the weak link in the military teams. The Coasties recognized this. The female member was incredible at orientation and land navigation. The team worked to minimize her weaknesses. There was a bike section and they hooked up a towing device, She always in the center on difficult areas etc. Most other teams expressed feeling the female member was a required liability. The Coasties made her a part of the team. The Coasties won.
