One course corrects by moving the stick left or right. One corrects for being behind timing by hitting afterburner and perhaps making a sonic boom. If that jet had to do both the pilot qualifications are in question.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - I thought the wording was either misleading or completely incorrect. If he was that far off his timing, he certainly needs some refresher time. My guess is the "official" story is just covering up for a hot-shot who needs some desk time.

Late 50's and early 60's. F-102 Delta Darts routinely broke the sound barrier in the Pittsburgh area. They always flew in groups of two. Loved it.
