Yesterday, I posted a short note on the Launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, which was an amazingly successful launch and is now on its way to the L2 (Lagrange Point), nearly 1 million miles (or 1.5, million Kilometers) away from Earth.
The video I am sharing with all of you is a LIVE look at the the distance from Earth to the JWST as you look at the Moving calculations! It's overall cruising speed is 1.0225 miles per second!!! Pretty darned fast!!! Note that the Hubble Space Telescope is but 570 Kilometers from Earth, where as the Moon is 384,400 Kilometers from Earth... the JWST is 1.5 million KMS from Earth, so it will take a little time to reach the L2 Lagrange Point...
This data-driven infographic shows the status of Webb on its journey to L2 orbit. The page constantly updates as Webb travels, deploys, and cools to operating temperature.
Deployment Phases and Steps
The intent of this video is to provide the viewer with a sense of progress of this expensive piece of Earth equipment, which if all goes well will give us a view of nearly the beginning of the Universe as we have understood it to date... Just remember that for each "SECOND" that passes, the JWST has gone 1.0225 miles... or 60 miles in one minute, or 3600 miles in one hour... if I did my math correctly... LOL!
I suggest watching this live video clip full screen for easy reading, note the distance, diminish the window and come back to it whenever you want to see how far the JWST has traveled...

Long way to go, my fingers may get cramps from having them crossed for so long.

It is amazing to me how many moving parts and how many intricate mechanisms need to work perfectly and in sequence for the telescope to come together. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the unfurling of the sun shield and deployment of the mirror in a couple of days!! Thanks for keeping us up to speed on this.
