Don't know all the particulars... but it sent a clear message to the military... cut & run. IMO...

Top rat fleeing the ship? Should he have stayed and showed the people of Afghanistan that he would fight the Taliban personally?

From what I read, watched and now get an idea of, had he not fled he would have been murdered. The world system sold out the 20 year adventure to, most likely, mining contracts to come and a marriage with the Taliban which will gain income for whatever the Taliban does.
