Our passion for equality can preserve America’s democracy

Journalist George Packer tackles the ideologies that have brought America to its current divide.
National Book Award winner George Packer doesn’t think America is dying. It’s fractured, yes, and packed with tensions, mainly as a result of four visions he says have emerged in this country.

Despite that, Packer writes in his 2021 book Last Best Hope: America in Crisis and Renewal that there is a path forward based on our shared passion for equality and the individualism that it produces.

It is that passion that Packer believes can lead us toward a more unified, progressive nation.

“We have no choice,” he writes, “but to live together – we’re quarantined as fellow citizens.”
