Hard to believe people still try to carry firearms on airplanes. He may have carried the pistol in hold baggage initially that is usually allowed if you declare it, it is unloaded and in a case with a lock. In Zimbabwe you have to produce documentation of ownership, take firearm to security where they check it and box it, you fill out forms and pick it back up at security when you land. Did some work in Zimbabwe and he will find out it is not a pleasant place to be jailed.

No sympathy. As a soldier he should certainly know the rules on firearms and airplanes.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen the only caveat is if you are flying with a handgun in checked baggage and you get diverted to NY and have to take possession of your checked baggage, you may be arrested. It has happened to too many people.

Do we know if he was working as a contractor in Zimbabwe ether for them or one of our alphabet organizations? Idiotic either way, I'd say! Or could someone have planted a pistol in his luggage? ( To make a point? ) But our current administration doesn't need an excuse to leave Ppl behind now, does it? Just some thinking outside the box!
