On 'Bloody Sunday,' Harris reflects on the current fight for voting rights

Vice President Kamala Harris visited Selma, Alabama, on Sunday to commemorate a defining moment in the fight for equal voting rights, even as congressional efforts to restore the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act have faltered.
Under a blazing blue sky, Harris linked arms with rank-and-file activists from the civil rights movement and led thousands across the bridge where, on March 7, 1965, white state troopers attacked Black voting rights marchers attempting to cross. The images of violence at the Edmund Pettus Bridge — originally named for a Confederate general — shocked the nation and helped galvanize support for passage of the Voting Rights Act.
Harris called the site hallowed ground on which people fought for the "most fundamental right of America citizenship: the right to vote."
"Today, we stand on this bridge at a different time," Harris said in a speech before the gathered crowd. "We again, however, find ourselves caught in between. Between injustice and justice. Between disappointment and determination. Still in a fight to form a more perfect union. And nowhere is that more clear than when it comes to the ongoing fight to secure the freedom to vote."

It isn’t any harder to vote than fly, open a bank account, buy booze etc. I have voted in Georgia over the last 30 years and stood in line with about every race of person in the world and never seen one person turned away.

MSG Stan Hutchison - Because if you haven’t noticed how we vote and when we vote have changed if you haven’t noticed. With Covid, Voting Laws were loosened. Boundaries needed to be reset. Again when I voted in a special election no problems.

THIS DECISION NO LONGER REQUIRED STATES AND LOCALITIES WITH A HISTORY OF SUPPRESSING VOTING RIGHTS TO SUBMIT CHANGES IN THEIR ELECTION LAWS TO THE U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FOR REVIEW. SINCE THIS RULING, 25 STATES CREATED NEW OBSTACLES TO VOTE.

The House has passed two bills to ensure free and fair elections. The Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747) would create national standards for access to the ballot box, make Election Day a holiday, and ensure that every state offers same-day voter registration at all polling locations by 2024 (and at a limited number by 2022).
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4) would reverse dangerous, undemocratic trends flowing from recent Supreme Court rulings.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made it illegal to treat others differently because of the race, gender, color, religion and national origin. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 made it illegal to discriminate against people who wanted to vote. The combination of these major national laws led to the end of Jim Crow.
Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States. The 13th amendment, which formally abolished slavery in the United States, passed the Senate on April 8, 1864, and the House on January 31, 1865.
58 years since its signing as of 2022 ... not that long ago.
The same people who complain about affirmative action and the civil rights act, while purposely NEVER F*ck’n acknowledging why those laws had to be made in the 1st place, because of racism in the USA.
