I wonder to some extent why when there was already a Space Command accomplishing these missions within the Air Force Structure why another branch of service is even needed. It seems often the Federal governments response to added missions is to make another bureaucracy and higher up structure when the same thing was already being accomplished with having to do that. Maybe I'm missing something here ? I'd be interested in thoughts or input other may have. I haven't seen a lot of discussion this area. This will certainly add a lot of expense and new sets of Regulation/Instructions that were already covered under the already existing Major Air Command, which was Space Command within the Air Force Structure. Apparently this is going to happen anyway and its is a mission that becomes more and more important but was this overkill ? Certainly if another branch does take hold which it appears they will that doesn't mean I won't support it but I had a few questions in my mind that I haven't seen anyone else that I'm aware of ask. As I already said I'd be interested in any input of thoughts any of You may have on this subject.

I see this as very similar to separating the Air Force from the Army. The Army stifled the Air Force just as the Air Force stifles anything but planes. We won't see the true benefit of the new service for several more years.

I think the big issues, Responsibilities and Logistics, have blinded them to taking care of the basics. You can't ignore either one especially at the Start-Up.

How long did it take for the Air Force to fully emerge from the Army after 1947? We were still recreating structures and operating methods long after 1947. Wasn't it 5 years before we even got distinctive rank insignia?
