‘Youngest Soviet defector’ sees himself in Ukrainian children fleeing Putin

Walter Polovchak sees his 12-year-old self in the faces of the children fleeing from Vladimir Putin’s brutal attacks.
The new world that Mr Putin is now trying to force on the Ukrainian people is the very same world that he escaped when he left Soviet-controlled Ukraine and fought for his freedom to stay in America more than four decades ago.
“To me it is like reliving my plight to live in the US and to be free, as this is the same stuff that I was leaving - the manipulation, the corruption, the government control,” he tells The Independent.

He's right...and from what I hear some of the Russian soldiers are defecting to Ukraine.

I had family that was stuck in east germany after WWII. Was stationed in northern west Germany and southern west Germany in the 80's also lived in heidelberg west germany in the later 60's. Had the opportunity to see the east. In east berlin if you got off the beaten path say just 2 blocks over the outside walls of the house had pockmarks in the walls from bullets and where the holes had just been patched over. The shelves in the markets were always empty. Kind of eye opening. The movie Moscow on the Hudson starring Robin Willams gives a very accurate picture of the USSR under communism. In addition all the extras were former soviet citizens.

Putin is a despot and a tyrant. He is like a 2 year old who has to have his way all the time. And we here in the US have a senile old fool that only opens his mouth long enough to change feet. I hope that the liberal lunatics lose their hold on the govt. in the midterms. maybe there is hope that both parties could move somewhat to the middle for the sake of this country
