"Videos are being published online of Russian tanks in Ukraine exploding in geysers of flame thanks to missiles provided by the United States and Britain. But those weapons have not stopped Russian forces from destroying Ukrainian towns and cities, like Mariupol, which largely stands in ruins after weeks of attacks with artillery, missiles and bombs. The Russians can often employ these weapons from ranges far outside the reach of Ukrainian troops.

There has been outrage over weapons the Russians are using, like cluster munitions and thermobaric rockets, and the White House has shared details about the arms the U.S. is sending to help Ukraine.

Here is more about the weapons used by Russia and by Ukrainian forces.

How has Ukraine destroyed so many Russian tanks?

Britain has given the Ukrainians more than 4,200 shoulder-fired weapons called NLAWs, which have destroyed Russian tanks and armored vehicles. In as little as 15 seconds, Ukrainian troops can unsling the relatively inexpensive weapon, unfold its aiming sight, release a safety catch and be ready to fire.

The launcher, which is easy to operate and can be tossed aside after use, has proved exceptionally adept in close-range ambushes.

The U.S. has sent Ukraine about 2,600 Javelins, longer-range shoulder-fired weapons that are similarly capable of wiping out Russian armor. Another 2,000 are on the way.

In total, NATO countries have shipped more than 17,000 antitank missiles and rockets to Ukraine, according to reports this month.

The British government announced Wednesday that it would send an additional 6,000 “defensive missiles” to Ukraine. Those missiles will include “antitank and high-explosive weapons,” according to a statement released by the British Embassy."...
