The air war over Europe had to be very depressing to crews.

Especially during the period from 17 Aug '42 through March '44. After the P-51 came into full production and Jimmy Doolittle turned Eighth AF fighters free from close escort and let them go after the enemy both in the air and on the ground, the tide turned. Missions were increased from 25 to 30 and then 35 for bomber crews by the late summer of '44. Losses dropped exponentially. It got to the point that some bomber crews never saw an enemy fighter in the air during a mission!
