Many gun owners support gun control. So why don't they speak out?

About 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. owns a firearm. And many of them feel misunderstood by the millions of Americans who don't. Researchers say this disconnect makes it difficult to unify around shared support for gun control and gun violence prevention.
For instance, going back to 2018, polls show a majority of gun owners support raising the legal gun ownership age from 18 to 21. Most also support red flag laws, which would allow police to take guns from people deemed dangerous by courts. A poll conducted after the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, shows an overwhelming majority of Americans agree.
But many gun owners are hesitant to speak out publicly about their support for stronger gun control policies, in part because they feel out of step with gun control advocates whom they view as wanting to take away all guns. "They feel they're being blamed," explains Michael Siegel of Tufts University, who co-authored a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine based on a survey of about 2,000 gun owners.

Don't know who they polled but the folks I shoot with would call BS on this poll.

Yes, many of us gun owners support change. The extreme gun nuts are holding us back.

There is a specific lobby that provides lots and lots of money to politicians (both Dems and GOP) that are against any form of reasonable restrictions. As a hunter, gun owner I have no issues with background checks, raising the age limit and restricting magazine size. I was at a range last week with 2 vet friends when we overheard a guy with an AR and large mag talking about it's need for hunting. The three of us burst out laughing, if you need that many shots you should not have that weapon in your hands. By the way, all 3 of us have spoken out on this and at a VFW discussion, the majority of us supported a range of limited restrictions.

Federally licensed gun sellers are required to run background checks. But not all sellers are required to be licensed. Some of those unlicensed sellers sell at gun shows.
It’s not clear how many sellers are licensed and how many are not. Some studies are out of date.
Perhaps the better name is private seller loophole.
