More than 150 years ago in 1865, Union soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. The troops brought the news that the American Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free.

Juneteenth has grown in the years since. The holiday is now celebrated across the country with backyard barbeques, parades, festivals and more.
