The Liberty African American Legacy Memorial honors the lives of 761 Black individuals who have been confirmed to be interred, mostly in unmarked graves, in the formerly segregated sections of Fairview and New Hope cemeteries in Liberty, Missouri.
Next week the long-invisible dead of Liberty, Missouri, will be rendered less so.
The Liberty African American Legacy Memorial, scheduled to be dedicated Saturday as part of the community’s Juneteenth celebration, is nearing completion.
It honors the lives of 761 Black individuals who have been confirmed to be interred, mostly in unmarked graves, in the formerly segregated sections of Fairview and New Hope cemeteries in Liberty.

..."Robins’ father and her aunt were also with her on Saturday. John Vertreese was disappointed when he was growing up and learned of the unmarked graves. He didn’t know where his family is. He still doesn’t. There’s no headstone. But now there’s memorial, where he sees their names.
He pointed out that the spelling of his family’s last name and of his last name is slightly different. At some point, the spelling changed.
“They are being recognized as being buried here before everybody that was buried here,” Vertreese said. “Having this recognizes them a lot.”

I'm sure there are unmarked Graves for American Indians who died at residential schools. We had a scandal last year of the same thing of missing and murdered Aboriginal boys and girls. It's good they are being honored and remembered.
