New, untested abortion bans have made doctors unsure about treating some pregnancy complications, which has led to life-threatening delays and trapped families in a limbo of grief and helplessness.
Elizabeth Weller never dreamed that her own hopes for a child would become ensnared in the web of Texas abortion law.
She and her husband began trying in late 2021. They had bought a house in Kingwood, a lakeside development in Houston. Elizabeth was in graduate school for political science, and James taught middle-school math.
The Wellers were pleasantly surprised when they got pregnant early in 2022.
In retrospect, Elizabeth says their initial joy felt a little naive: "If it was so easy for us to get pregnant, then to us it was almost like a sign that this pregnancy was going to be easy for us."
Things did go fairly smooth at first. Seventeen weeks into the pregnancy, they learned they were expecting a girl. They also had an anatomy scan, which revealed no problems. Even if it had, the Wellers were determined to proceed.

Hopefully, this will make some republicans wake up and realize that the terrible decision by SCOTUS needs to be addressed and abortion needs to be codified as a right.

SrA John Monette - They don't care!!! They don't care until something affects them and even if their spouse and/or mistress needs an abortion, they can still get one for them. They'll still find access. Just like they did before Roe.

You're sick, but not sick enough. Your fetus is probably dead, but not dead enough. I understand that doctors are reluctant to break the law, even one as unethical as this. But when the hell do we start taking into account what the woman wants or needs? Stop being so damn afraid of the consequences of challenging an unjust law. Stand up for these women.

I agree. That said I see the struggle from the providers side as well. Most states are including language requiring an "affirmative defense" That means the medical provider must prove they are innocent of the criminal charges. The prosecutor is not held to the common criminal standard for "beyond a reasonable doubt". Also, there's no insurance coverage for any prosecution. They are going to be losing their jobs, pay and all other resources will be threatened for their license & livelihood, they & their families will be bankrupted. Who wants to put their family through that as the "test" case? And SCOTUS as it exists today won't be willing nor able to take that test case without bias.
