Senate Democrats on Wednesday blocked two bills from Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) that would have used COVID-19 stimulus funds to bolster school security and mental health resources for students.
The Securing Our Schools Act, which was cosponsored by Sen. John Barrasso (R., Wyo.), would double the number of police officers in public, charter, and private schools, strengthen physical security measures like alarms and locks, and put thousands of mental health professionals in public schools. The Protect Our Children’s Schools Act would fund that effort, appropriating billions of dollars in unspent education-related COVID funding. Sen. Chris Murphy (D., Conn.) objected on the Senate floor to both, killing the legislation after Cruz sought unanimous consent.

Nice political ploy but Covid-19 funds have to be used for Covid and Cruz/Barrasso know this well. Pure politics so midterm ads can say Democrats are against school security and mental health.

Covid funds are ALLOCATED to covid projects. But they have ALREADY been diverted to multiple non-Covid projects. If that money has not been spent Congress can undo the allocation.
Additionally, adding mental health professionals is VERY MUCH in line with Covid, as MULTIPLE studies have shown an increase in depression and anxiety and an overall decrease in mental health during the lockdowns. This was ESPECIALLY true in school aged children.
There was also an increase in violent crime during that period. Linking it to Covid in order to apply Covid funding is a stretch, but less so than some of the other Covid projects out there.
