It was Oct. 25, 1962, and the U.S. Air Force captain was piloting a U-2 spy plane on the edge of Earth’s atmosphere, taking high-resolution images of nuclear missile sites on the island nation about 100 miles from Florida. The world teetered toward total destruction as tensions escalated between the United States and Soviet Union during the Cuban missile crisis 60 years ago this week. As McIlmoyle snapped photos, a flash of light caught his eye. The Soviet and Cuban militaries had launched a pair of surface-to-air missiles. Thankfully, a course correction he’d made moments earlier caused the missiles to miss his plane.

I was just getting ready for high school… HAWK batteries were positioned on our favorite beach … the race track became a major Headquarters… living in South Florida left an impression that thermonuclear war was real and very close … yes I remember it well and it will never leave me!

I remember this well Lt Col Charlie Brown, close to war with Russia. A good friend of mine, retired Air force Colonel flew U2s but long after the Cuban Missile crisis.

One of those things you'll never forget if you lived through it. I remember I was working at my Junior Achievement company and the radio was tuned to music but the news broke in when word came out that the Soviet ships had turned around.
