It’s been said often that someone with a military background is a natural leader. You’ve been taught to take risks, assume accountability, face adversity and uncertainty, and care for those around you. Leadership is that act of leading and influencing others in a team, organization or initiative. Servant leadership takes leadership one step further. A servant leader -- someone who leads with a servant heart -- describes a philosophy that is selfless, focused on others and not about power, fame or credit. A servant leader truly is more concerned and passionate about bettering the environment or those they lead than taking control.

Most successful military leaders have also learned their job from the bottom up and those serving under them know it. Even as a Supervisor I would occasionally perform every task that my guys were required to do no matter what it was. My guys knew I knew every aspect of their job.
Additionally if anyone had an issue with ANYTHING my troops did on the job they had to come to me, I would take corrective action, but I was their Supervisor so took complete responsibility for the actions of my crew. What they did on their off time was theirs, but on duty crew performance was on me.

Real leaders serve subordinates by providing them the tools they need to succeed in their mission. They will also not hesitate to stand in front as a shield to defend their flock for all things moral and just. Most importantly, real leaders will not use their subordinates in a way that enhances their personal gain. To me, that's servant leadership and the philosophy I hold near and dear to my heart as a leader in both the civilian and military world.
