..."Listening to Eugene Nayshtetik, one of the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees who relocated from Kyiv to Warsaw last year, it becomes quickly clear that, for him, living in Poland is not an escape. Rather, it is a logistical trick necessary to complete his real mission: helping Ukraine win the war and build a better future for his country and his people.

Nayshtetik is managing partner of Lorton Investments, a business development company dealing mainly in biotechnology and medical technology, which since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has been branching out into military technology.

The shift has been driven by Nayshtetik’s personal evolution. When the Euromaidan protests began in Kyiv in 2013 over the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych’s refusal to sign a free trade and association deal with the EU, Nayshtetik tapped into his experience working for pharmaceutical companies to help organise a shadow medical service, including an underground hospital, to treat wounded protesters.

Later, when Russia invaded the eastern Donbas region in 2014, Nayshtetik worked on the front line as a volunteer coordinating medical services for Ukrainian soldiers.

The start of the full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022 found him living in the village of Semypolky, next to the Zalissia National Park, northeast of Kyiv. Consequently, he went on to command the territorial unit that defended the region during the “Battle for Kyiv”, which lasted between the end of February and early April in 2022.

It was while clearing explosives left behind by the Russians that Nayshtetik and his colleagues developed a remote detonator, which was later used widely by the Ukrainian army. From then on, Nayshtetik’s company started developing military hi-tech products."...
