This is the USS Aaron Ward (DM-34), a destroyer minelayer, as it looked after being hit by four kamikaze aircraft in May 1945 off Okinawa. The ship made it back to the states, but was so badly damaged that it was sold for scrap in 1946.

Oh my goodness, and it made it back to the states. That's some amazing damage control and seamanship at work there.

Well deserved recognition and award. It's a shame his heroism was hidden from the world.
