Also, I found local and state groups to help learn the various soils and conditions to consider in my area of Central Texas, I imagine most states have experts that share knowledge and agricultural schools (I often use Texas A&M's website to find information) that offer tips and classes, etc.. It's very helpful in that, although you can purchase plants for your "zone", it doesn't always work since areas within your zone can vary greatly in soil acidity and composition, etc..
