The headline is misleading. I commented on this where this story was posted elsewhere. A closer look at the study cited for the 1/3 number states:

"Results showed that military members were more prone to lifetime arrests and overall substance misuse. However, additional findings emerged suggesting that, while the military population overall seems to be positively associated with higher criminal activity than that found in the civilian population, these findings were [emphasis] based on a specific subgroup of the veteran population. This subgroup is comprised of individuals who likely did not fit in with the military culture and were discharged from the military early in their careers."

The person that wrote the article is seeking to help veterans, but the headline detracts from the purpose and is very misleading. Not sure if the same person who wrote the article also gets to choose the headline.

MSgt Steve Sweeney Agreed. The author explained her story briefly and it's tragic that she was assaulted, which affected her decision making. I think it's pretty awesome that she did reform and that she is now trying to help others. However; her help is coming "after the fact" that they have chosen a criminal path.

I've been retired for almost seven years but in my opinion, during my time, so much energy was directed at training on the importance of fulfilling one's duty and making appropriate choices. I can also confirm that I sat in court rooms on four different occasions with four different Sailors because of choices they had made. I've mentioned it before, of those four, only one was truly an accident, and had no malicious intent.

Arrested is not the same as convicted or even charged.

No, 1/3 of vets do not have a record.
