I had the displeasure of serving under him during that Iraq rotation mentioned in this write up. A real horse's behind that didn't give a hoot about troops or families.

My BN sent me on ADVON, despite my seriously pregnant wife. She gave birth three days later when Main Body 1 still had 5 days left until they flew. When she was going in to labor, she asked for help from both unit and FRG to get to the hospital and/or watch our three year old, and was told to figure it out herself. She ended up driving herself to the hospital and checking out early against medical advice because there was no one to care for 3 year old, who she left with neighbor she didn't even know.

When (then) MG Sanchez found out he praised her for her spirit of a "true Iron wife." Not a word about MASSIVE failures of leadership or FRG, and not a thing was done about it.

He also told us all that he would be the last onto the battlefield and the first off of it. And, he meant it.

Wasn't that the words of Westmoreland in the Viet Nam era? I have his book, A SOLDIER REPORTS

It's good to hear from someone who actually served under Sanches. Those of us who only read the report about his career don't know the man have no idea of how he really was. I believe your side of things. Thanks for your post.

Ricardo Sanches certainly had a distinguished career. The military needs more people like him.
