Possibly a fairly sane way to live for 3 years. Food is included, usually there is a medical team on board. My only question would be are there times when the ship is in port for an extended stay, does she have to disembark?

For this particular cruise, no.

When my wife and I last cruised we met a few folks who had done this, permanently. One can cruise for around $3,000 / month for the basic packages. This obviously cannot be done by most people for an extended period while still maintaining all of the other "standard" living things - home, car, etc. But if you just live there? No more mortgage/rent, car payments, car insurance, electric/gas/water/etc., groceries, etc.? $3000 / month starts to sound really cheap. Toss on $150 / month for a really good phone plan (lots of international time), and maybe $200 / month for food at port calls and $250 / month for excursions, you are $3600 / month for pretty decent living, and traveling the world while doing it. Between retirement and disability, I can cover that, with a bit leftover....

Of course, that is one person - and my wife would be a bit upset if I sold our house and ran away to a ship.

..."Lane hasn’t yet told her daughter or grandsons she’ll be embarking on the cruise. “I don’t want them to try and talk me out of it,” she says. Lane thinks they will support her decision, but three years is a long time, and it’s likely she won’t see much of her loved ones on land while she’s circumnavigating the world.

But Lane’s looking forward to video-calling family and friends from far flung locales – and she’s excited to forge new connections on board. She’s heard there will be many solo travelers on the voyage and reckons they will be keen to socialize. In fact, the cruise line has already connected many of the guests via an app, says Lane, and “it’s already a good time.”,,,
