We just aren't getting it...every suicide to the person who makes that choice, is an individual one but what ties them together for me is a failure of leadership to connect them to something bigger than themselves...to feel a responsibility to the "tribe"

There is none of that beyond platoon or company level. The military has become a series of promotion gaining PCS moves to random locations and everyone is an individual rather than a member of a team. Combat arms enjoys the best motivation usually as they train and work together…where as many other MOS positions are like civilian work in that the member just shows up, does some random things till time to go and then departs to be on their own again, mostly unsupervised and alone.

I just really wonder about the why's of the increase. We aren't at war and there hasn't been any intense issues burning through the services.

Well we are enlisting and commissioning persons that in the past would have been medically unqualified for service due to psychological conditions. That should be a big No-Go. The internal problems do no go away just because we allow the person in now. Another issue is like LTC Brown mentions…disconnected….in a society so connected many/most? Of our young are not physically connected and revolve around a “virtual” world of electronic friends, emotions and events. Our units are spread out and formations occur much less so leadership places eyes on troops less..again due to electronic devise help. With the BCT concept the concept of regimental and divisional pride left and nobody covers history, purpose, membership and traditions of these tangled masses of random battalions.
In short young unstable soldiers are tossed into meaningless units and not monitored or mentored by responsible adults as the current leadership grew up the same way. Im sure this is only the tip of the multitude of causes.

All so true. I truly feel for our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines in our next major conflict. . . .

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. I do too.

Being the sin of a Marine and the grandson of a Soldier wounded in WW2, I was told and knew the ramifications of service during a period of war. I still almost fell victim to it.
