Did you know in England during and after WWI, wounded / amputee / marred service members/ veterans were made to sit on blue benches that were out of public view when the vet went out of doors. No one would want to go to War if they had to see what war's returns on investment were.
So, it was law that wounded/ disfigured veterans/ soldiers were only to use the Blue Benches to rest while in public. None of which were out in the open like other benches.

Its no wonder this caught them by surprise, the carnage and the sheer amount of ordnance expended by both sides was phenomenal and not seen before. I couldn't imagine sitting through a barrage only to face machine guns the whole way across no man's land.
