"The Khalistan movement calls for an independent homeland for Sikhs in India1. The movement was at its peak in the 1980s in Indian state of Punjab, when the area experienced a series violent attacks and deaths. It lost steam after Indian armed forces ran special operations against the movement1. Sikh militants began agitating for a separate homeland in the 1970s, complaining of unfair treatment on the part of the central government2. Most Sikhs moved to India fearing they would be discriminated against by the Pakistani government on the basis of their religion3."
