Newshour - Scientists behind mRNA Covid vaccines win Nobel Prize - BBC Sounds

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to a pair of scientists who developed the technology that led to the mRNA Covid vaccines.
Professors Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman share the award for their groundbreaking work in mRNA technology, which they started more than 20 years ago at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Nobel Prize committee said: "The laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times."
Newshour's Tim Franks started by asking them how they felt when they first got the call.

Dr Kariko was senior vice president and head of RNA protein replacement at BioNTech until 2022 and has since acted as an adviser to the company, while Dr Weissman works as a professor in vaccine research at the Perelman School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Last year's medicine prize went to Swede Svante Paabo for sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day humans, and for discovering a previously unknown human relative, the Denisovans.
Past winners also include Alexander Fleming, who shared the 1945 prize for the discovery of penicillin.
The remaining five awards will be unveiled in the coming days."
