Shortly after Mitt Romney announced in 2018 that he'd be running to succeed Orrin Hatch as a Utah senator that year, he received a call from then-President Donald Trump.
Trump — who had won the deep red state in 2016 but by a margin that was less imposing than previous GOP nominees — likely thought it would be advantageous to forge some sort of working relationship with the former Republican presidential nominee as it appeared highly likely he'd be heading to Washington the next year.
In the newly-released book "Romney: A Reckoning," the now-senator told author McKay Coppins that Trump touted his victory in the state during the call and bragged that he was "loved by the people in Utah."
Trump then gave the reasoning for why he was "loved" by most voters in the state: land.

After Romney joined the Senate in 2019, he would go on to have a tumultuous relationship with Trump, especially after voting to convict Trump of abuse of power in his first impeachment trial over allegations that he sought to pressure Ukraine for his own political gain.
Romney also voted to convict Trump for "incitement of insurrection" for his role during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
President Joe Biden in October 2021 restored the roughly 2 million acres of land to the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.
