Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita made national headlines in 2022 when he criticized a doctor who provided an abortion for a 10-year-old rape victim from Ohio. In doing so, he also violated two rules governing attorney conduct, according to the Indiana Supreme Court.
The high court issued a public reprimand of Rokita on Thursday, saying his comments about Dr. Caitlin Bernard were highly likely to create improper influence and also "had no substantial purpose other than to embarrass or burden the physician."

..."Dr. Caitlin Bernard was thrust into the public spotlight in June 2022, after she spoke with a reporter about a 10-year-old patient who had crossed state lines into Indiana to obtain an abortion which she could not receive in her home state of Ohio.
Soon after news of the case went public, Rokita appeared on a Fox News program hosted by Jesse Waters, in which he referred to Benard as an “abortion activist acting as a doctor — with a history of failure to report.”
The case and comments resulted in Rokita filing an administrative action against Benard, who sued Rokita claiming he had launched an unfair investigation into the care she had provided for the young patient.
After the Indiana Medical Licensing Board held a hearing, they left Bernard’s medical license in good standing and cleared her of any wrongdoing for failing to report the patient’s abuse to the proper state authorities.
However, the board found that Bernard’s comments to the reporter did break privacy rules, and she was reprimanded and fined $3,000.
After the medical board’s decision, the Indiana Supreme Court’s disciplinary commission filed charges against Rokita claiming that the attorney general had violated attorney conduct rules by making the activist comment while conducting an investigation into Bernard.
The 6-page order issued by the Indiana Supreme Court agreed and found that Rokita had violated two Indiana Professional Conduct Rules: Making an extrajudicial statement that a lawyer participating in the litigation or investigation of a matter knows or reasonably should know will be publicly disseminated and will have a substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing an adjudicative proceeding in the matter; and using means in representing a client that have no substantial purpose other than to embarrass, delay, or burden a third person."...
