"The military health system has a major shortage of behavioral health providers, which often sends service members off base to seek care from civilian providers as they wait for spots to open up at a military treatment facility.
But the Defense Health Agency doesn’t track whether service members in crisis are receiving timely care out in town, according to a Government Accountability Office report released Tuesday, making it impossible to ensure that troops are getting the help they need or to fix any issues they have with obtaining care."

Problem is the VA is short providers as is the Army and civilian sector. Our city has only one Clinical Psychopharmacologist and when he retires there won't be any in town for anyone. He is a damn fine psychologist to boot. Thing is most mental health providers are in big cities which is where you do not find military bases. The only way you are going to get providers is for the VA and the Military to up their pay and benefits for these much needed providers which at the moment they rather not do. Therefore AD and Vets will pay the price for this dereliction of duty on the part of the VA and the Military.
