Republicans are raising questions about the impartiality of Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the probe into former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents and refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election.

Smith began his career as a prosecutor in 1994 as an assistant district attorney in New York. In 1999, he joined the Justice Department as an assistant U.S.
attorney, where prosecuted police and political corruption.

Smith left the DOJ in 2008 to work for the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, but he returned in 2010 as the lead of the department’s public integrity section. In the role, Smith was charged with overseeing the federal government’s efforts to combat corruption.

* OSC Issues Hatch Act Report Documenting Violations by 13 Senior Trump Administration Officials, Including at the 2020 Republican National Convention

* OSC did find violations by 13 senior Trump administration officials, including two violations in connection with the 2020 RNC. The report outlines how the 13 officials used their official authority or influence to interfere with or affect the result of the 2020 presidential election. Taken together, the report concludes that the violations demonstrate both a willingness by some in the Trump administration to leverage the power of the executive branch to promote President Trump's reelection and the limits of OSC's enforcement power.

4.) Special counsel investigating Trump is impartial and tough, former colleagues say

By Patricia Hurtado Bloomberg News Nov 21, 2022

* John L. “Jack” Smith was part of a team that won the first death penalty case in a New York federal court in a half a century, then went on to the International Criminal Court, where he prosecuted genocide and war crimes. As a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, New York, he handled some of the city’s most violent cases, former colleagues say.

* honed his investigative and trial skills over 30 years of fighting cases involving corruption, crimes and police brutality.

* “Gangsters, cops and war criminals, these are the kinds of cases he’s worked on during his career and those are some of the toughest cases to prosecute,” said Alan Vinegrad, who was acting Brooklyn U.S. attorney in 2002 and is now a partner at Covington & Burling LLP.

* Vinegrad and Smith prosecuted the NYPD case together.
