I have been married to a Native woman for over 50 years. She is Dene' (Navajo) born and raised on the reservation. Most of her surviving family still live there. She enlisted in the US Army to get away from the reservation and find her path in life. Fortunately for me, that path led to me.
We visit her family as often as possible. Her older sister (85 years old) still runs sheep on her land. She used to make beautiful blankets, but now no longer can. I am proud to own one. She got electricity to her house back in 2014 and just last year got running water. She is a proud Democrat and votes every election. (she has no picture ID.)

Want to know more about our indigenous people? Travel to their lands. Walk the reservation with some inhabitants. Most are friendly. Most will talk to you.
However, you will never completely understand them.
