It's not a competition and resting on laurels is always a bad choice.<sigh> Seems we have forgotten how to be the greatest country *for Americans* instead of imaging we we are the greatest country for the entire world (which certainly seems like an empire building effort). Big difference - very big difference.
What makes nations great, imho, is when their priority is to first be good to and for their own people.
