I feel very privileged to have met a number of them who were visiting here on "hero flights"

I saw some hero flights of WW2 veterans being pushed by active duty Jr Enlisted in Uniform. I flew in Uniform and some shook my hand in 2018-2019.

Like a lot of folks my age, every single one of my Uncles (on both sides)- and two Aunts- and my Dad were all WW II Vets. So we all grew up around them. Sadly, most of them didn't talk much about the War. A few stories they were willing to tell. But in General, very closed mouthed about their Service. Except for the Humorous Stories. Those they liked to repeat. Quiet heroes all.

I wish I'd have been smart enough to have talked with my grandfather and uncle about their service in World War 2. But I was 16 when Grandpa Owen died in 1977, and he refused to speak of it. My uncle Earl didn't consider his WW2 service to have been anything special and said so and would say nothing else. He passed in 1988.

Owen survived the Huertgen Forest and was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. Earl served on a refueling ship in the Pacific.

I know what you mean, Colonel. They all seem to think it was just a job they had to do. It was a hard job and when they came home, they didn’t want to talk about it. And a lot of them were gone for the entire war. For most of my relatives I didn’t find out what they did or where they served until the funeral.
