I certainly applaud him following his dream and I certainly wish him all the best, but I am curious.....a college degree got him E2 only?

If one enlists, a college degree doesn't guarantee anything, but might give him a leg up for a commissioning program if that is the route he wants to go.
Recruit training is one thing. School of Infantry (SOI) is a different animal. If he was looking for a physical challenge under austere conditions, he is headed to the right place.

I was drafted after getting my degree in college and went into the Army as an E-1. They offered me OCS but I had a career already in mind
