Four Nebraskans among 74 names to be added to Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Sage brothers served together on the U.S.S. Frank E. Evans during the Vietnam War.

In June 1969, their ship collided with an Australian aircraft carrier. The three brothers and Gary Hodgson were among 74 killed.

6 News spoke with Eunice Sage, the brothers’ mother, in 1999 after a memorial was dedicated to them in Niobrara.

“Gary was the oldest. He was 16 months older than Greg,” she said. “Greg was two years (and) three months older than Kelly Jo. That was awful. We didn’t know anything until Walter Cronkite said they don’t think the Sage brothers will come home, and that’s when I fainted.”
