Captain Steve Ritchie was on fire. He’d already taken out two MiGs in his latest Vietnam tour and was itching for more. On July 8, 1972, his chance came. An American warplane had taken a hit and was leaking fuel and hydraulic fluid like a stuck pig. The desperate pilot called for help on the emergency frequency.

Two of my paternal cousins were pilots in Vietnam, one in the Navy and the other the Air Force. They never discussed their missions with us.

I did not know anyone in the Air force. I worked for the Buffalo Sabers on the 200 level bridge. I also worked with a good buddy of mine who served in the Americal division, and we both wore military pins on our sport coat. A former pilot starting a chat with both of us. He told us a story about a briefing he had with other pilots. They were chosen to fly with, and guard a B 52 squadron. During their briefing the XO told them that if any of you assholes let one of the B 52's get shot down, believe me when I get trough with you, you be able to get a job driving a taxi.
