When my class graduated from Infantry OCS in February 1967, we were told that those of us who had completed the full 6 months had fired $20,000 of ammunition of all types: Pistols, rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers, 3.5 rocket launchers, mortars, howitzers, tanks, etc. (There was even a HE round from a Davy Crocket.) Obviously the cost of ammunition has risen precipitously during the intervening years, but this is ridiculous

But think of all the money my Infantry unit and others like it “saved “ on M16 ammunition during that same time period, 1967 in Southeast Asia,only able to fire one round then jamming,,Mattie Mattel’s whiz kid McNamara brought a whole new set of cost saving parameters to the boonies, Welcome Home Brothers.
