Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the September 13th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) had this grand view of the Southern Lights (aurora australis) as they passed over the Indian Ocean during the solar storms of August 2024. ISS orbits ~270 miles above the Earth. The green emission from ionized oxygen extends up to ~ 150 miles, while the red emission can extend above 300 miles. Now that's an IMAX experience. Queue some Mannheim Steamroller for the sound track.
