APOD: 2025 January 9 - Peculiar Galaxies of Arp 273

Good evening, Rallypoint, and welcome to the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for January 9, 2025.
What makes a 'peculiar galaxy'? It is a galaxy with unusual size, shape, or composition. There are two types of peculiar galaxies: interacting galaxies and those with active galactic nuclei (AGN). We'll likely have an opportunity to discuss AGNs in another APOD post later this year.
So back to interacting galaxies...like Arp 273. We are referring to a pair of interacting galaxies, 300 million light years away in the constellation Andromeda. It was first described in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies, compiled by American astronomer Halton Arp in 1966. The published Hubble images of Arp 273 have been much more focused, so I will that investigation for those of you that are interested.
If you know someone who lives in the Santa Monica area (or who has family there), check on them to see if they are alright.

Love the spiral with a tail. I have a former B-52 gunner in Santa Monica who lost everything, couple others in area that I haven't heard from.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price It's amazing that we are able to monitor these peculiar galaxies within the Andromeda Constellation! We are moving at what seems like light speed, as we pursue our space studies!!! Excellent share, Bill!!!
