APOD: 2025 January 27 – Pleiades over Half Dome

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to this edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for January 27, 2025.
If you've ever driven or hiked through (or seen pictures from) Yosemite National Park in California, you might recognize Half Dome: one side is a sheer face while the other three sides are smooth and round, making it appear like a dome cut in half. Its peak is 8,800 feet above sea level.
Half Dome at night takes on a completely different look. Based on the photographer's notes, this image is a composite of 28 foreground exposures and 174 images of the stellar background, all taken from the same location and by the same camera on a single night in October 2019. The Pleiades adds an other-worldly cosmic touch to the final product.
