I'd like to hear that case stated as well. IMO there isn't a single thing that the federal level Department of Education does that could not be done at the state and local level. Plus, we could move 4,100 federal employees back into the private sector.
If the Department of Education is shuttered, the next thing in education to look at is the state-level Depatments of Education. I do think there is a place for state level Departments of Education, but great deal of what they do could be handed off to the local levels. the state should play more of an IG style role or take on roles collectively for the smaller local school districts that cannot support analytical and developmental staff based on limited tax bases.

Maj John Bell - Dept of Ed does not need to be a full up Department. Make them a special agency to manage the federal assistance and accreditation standards, and let the states handle the rest.

DOE hasn't been around all that long and our students have been progressively getting worse on standardized test. With the Fed in charge there's always going to be an agenda above education
