Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to this edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day for February 19, 2025.
The Taurus Molecular Cloud lies a mere 430 light years from Earth, and tucked away inside of it is Herbig-Haro (HH) 30. A HH object (like HH 30) refers to the area surrounding newborn stars (known as protostars). One of the characteristics of HH objects that researchers first notice are the jets of gas that form about the rotational axis of the newborn stars. Astronomer George Herbig first noted HH 30 in 1974.
If you mouse over today's APOD, you can see the different regions of HH 30 that are catching so much attention. Scientists believe the disc at the center of HH 30 is where planets are forming.
